Why does Ofsted inspect schools?By law, Ofsted must carry out school inspections. They inspect schools to provide information to parents and carers, to promote improvement and to hold schools to account for the public money they receive. Ofsted provide an independent assessment of the quality and standards of education in schools, and check whether pupils are achieving as much as they can. Each school is given a grade. What grades can schools be given?Ofsted give schools an overall grade from 1 to 4: Grade 1 (outstanding) Grade 2 (good) Grade 3 (satisfactory ) Grade 4 (inadequate). Schools graded as inadequate will be placed into one of two categories; "Special Measures" or placed on "Notice to Improve". Special measures means a school is failing to provide its pupils with an acceptable standard of education, and is not showing the capacity to make the improvements needed. Inspectors will visit the school regularly to check its progress. Notice to Improve means either a school is failing to provide its pupils with an acceptable standard of education but it does have the capacity to improve ; or it is not failing, but is performing significantly less well than is reasonably expected. When do inspections happen? Grade 1 (outstanding) - Inspections take place every five years Grade 2 (good) - Inspections take place every five years Grade 3 (satisfactory ) - Inspections take place every three years Grade 4 (inadequate) - Special Measures Schools every two years, Notice to Improve schools within a year What happens after an inspection? The lead inspector will report her or his judgement to the headteacher and governors.
